Total Knee Arthroplasty in Rheumatoid Arthritis




Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by pain, joint stiffness and deformity, and usually involve the knee joint. Total knee anthroplasty is performed to relieve pain, to preserve joint motion, and to correct the
angular
deformity.
At the department of Hanyang University Hospital, total knee arthroplasty was performed in 58 patients (99 knees) who had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis during the period from rheumatoid arthritis during the period from August, 1989 to
August,
1993,
and had followed for from 12 months to 5 months to 5 years(average 2 years and 5 months).
@ES The results were as follow:
@EN 1. The range of motion increased from an average of 90.4 degrees preoperatively to 117.9 degrees postoperatively.
2. The flexion contracture decreased from an average of 28.9 degrees preoperatively to 4.7 degrees postoperatively.
3. The tibiofdemoral angle was in valgus angulation in 78 knees, varus angulation in 14, and neutral in 7 preoperatively. They were corrected from valgus 5.4 degrees prepoeratively to valgus 6.4 degrees postoperatively.
4. The average scores according to the system of the Hospital for Special Surgery improved from 31.7 points preoperatively to 83.5 points postoperatively.
5. Postoperatively, there were superficial wound infection in 1 cases and supracondylar fracture of the femur in 1 cases.
